HISTORICAL INTEREST
Druim na Coup 2 miles South of Tongue in
the shadow of Ben Loyal, is the site of a bloody battle
in 1431 in which the Mackays soundly defeated the
Sutherland's.
Prince Charlie's gold
Shortly before the battle of Culloden in 1746 ,the sloop
Hazard left Dunkirk carrying some £20.000 of gold for
the Prince (indeed a princely sum in today's values ).Hazard
was intercepted at the Moray Firth by the Sheerness, an
English man o war and pursued around the North coast.
Hoping to escape by sailing into the shallow waters of
the Kyle of Tongue, Hazard ran aground off Skinnet, where
she was destroyed by cannon fire.

The crew made ashore with the gold and headed South
for Inverness, but were caught by the Mackays ( loyal to
the Crown ) at Lochan Hakel just South of Tongue, where
they and the gold were taken. The survivors were briefly
imprisoned in the old boathouse, still standing by the
House of Tongue.
